What Can I Do?

If you, too, feel strongly that building an interprovincial bridge in the Greenbelt is a mistake, please get involved in any or all of the ways listed below.

Talk with friends, colleagues, and local business owners about this issue to help spread the word so that we can be united in our opposition to a new interprovincial bridge in the Greenbelt. Encourage those that you speak with to visit this website, to better understand the issues and to keep up to date on events and decisions related to the bridge.

Attend any public meetings on this issue to demonstrate your opposition. Watch our website for announcements or share your email address with us so we can inform you of important events.

Write to your government representative to let them know you oppose adding an Interprovincial Bridge in the Greenbelt. You can find a template letter here (***hyperlink to a PDF to come)

As a resident of ..........................., I am shocked to find that discussions about the Interprovincial Bridge have begun again. I am also disappointed that no one is keeping us apprised of the situation when so much is at stake. The effect of such a bridge through the Greenbelt will be devastating for several reasons, namely:

  • This will be one of the biggest changes the East End will ever see to its landscape and lifestyle.

  • To date, no argument or data has convincingly demonstrated any compelling need for a Greenbelt bridge.

  • The government’s own studies have shown it will not solve the downtown truck problem.

  • A six-lane bridge will paralyze already over-stressed infrastructure (Hwy 174).

  • Hwy 174 will not support the predicted increase in traffic.

  • The gridlock at the 417 Split is already intolerable and impacts every commuter living east of St. Laurent Blvd.

Additionally, either bridge location will irreparably harm the Greenbelt, a designated ecological preservation area. More specifically:

  • The Greenbelt happens to be one of the most appealing features of living in the East End. It offers year-round recreation and active transportation to everyone.

  • COVID has underlined the importance of green spaces in supporting community health and well-being. We have seen in Toronto where residents would not tolerate infringement in those spaces. Should we not be letting people know that our Greenbelt is at risk and that we must prepare to defend it before a decision is made?

As city councillors, you also realize that, although this is a federal initiative, the city will be responsible for all of the supporting infrastructure and life-cycle maintenance costs at a time when it can least afford it. Why is all of the City Council not engaged with this issue? Should not residents of the East End be made aware that this problem could become their reality and be invited to share in the discussion?

Because the impacts of this bridge will be felt, not only in the East End but across the entire city, I am asking you to help raise awareness by speaking with your constituents and City Council colleagues. We need your help and support to stop an initiative that only disadvantages our communities.

Yours truly,
